OLD FLOOR TECHNICAL DETAILS

OLD FLOOR boards build

OLD FLOOR boards are made with three solid wood layers:

A) A top ‘noble’ layer, 4.8mm thick, is available in the following different wood types (Oak, European steamed Walnut, Pear, Chestnut, European Cherry, Steamed Acacia, European Maple, Elm, Larch) while 4.0 mm thick for the exotic woods (Asian Teak, Wengè, Doussiè, Iroko).

B) A Norwegian spruce central layer (Picea abies Karst.) 5.4mm thick for the 15mm boards and 10.4mm for the 20mm thickness – with grain running at 90 degrees to the top and bottom layers.

C) The bottom layer of the same type as the top for the Oak boards, or any other technologically compatible wood type (other sizes and wood types).

The gluing system by OLD FLOOR and the D3 class vinyl type of gluing guarantee high material stability as well as absence of formaldehyde emission. The floor-board is made with bevel on all four sides to exalt size and to avoid that possible imperfections of the laying surface may effect the floor-board surface planarity. OLD FLOOR boards are in compliance with the UNI EN 13489:2004 standards (multi-layer elements with joint) and are made with raw natural materials.

MANUFACTURING: Pre-sanded, Brushed, Old effect planing, Borgogna planing, Hewed, Sawed
– FINISHES: Raw, Oiled, Waxed, Varnished, Varnished and Waxed
– BEVELLING: ALL products on every side
– JOINT: tongue and groove on all four sides
– PATTERNED PANELS: panels are made with grooves on all four sides and supplied with laying core-bore
– SIZES: the maxi floor-boards are supplied in 3-4 different width sizes. The given length and width sizes are only indicative; sizes will be given according to the availability of the wood chosen.

OLD FLOOR complies with the UNI EN 13489 standards (multi-layer elements with joint), glued with D3 vinyl glues. Top layer thickness after smoothing is 4.8 mm on maxi floor-boards and normal floor-boards; 4 mm on staves, small staves and exotic woods. Spruce wood central layer.

Finishes

The OLD FLOOR boards are available in the natural oiled, waxed, varnished or varnished-waxed finishes.
The different finishes are made with products that enhance the wood natural look but at the same time guarantee good abrasion and spot-resistance while being a non-toxic product (varnished and varnished-waxed).

Installation

Laying

The particular structural characteristics employed by Old Floor in the production of its boards guarantee a wide range of laying techniques (gluing, floating and nailing) to the final client.
It is necessary to consider the following aspects before carrying out the laying.

Laying plan

– Solidity & firmness of laying surface.
– Thickness uniformity and sub-base rigidity.
– Absence of cracks and splits.
– Supporting floor humidity content, measured with carbide hygrometer, must always be under 1.7% (cementituos) or 0.2% (anhydride).
– Sub-base cleanliness.
– A suitable moisture screen or barrier must be present.
– In case of floor heating system, it must have been previously tested and laying must be carried out with the system switched off.

Site conditions

– Room temperature must be between 14 and 278C.
– Air humidity must be between 40 and 60%.
– Rooms must be completed with windows, doors and shutters.
– Wall painting must be completed.
– Any sort of job that may damage flooring must be completed before laying.

Gluing system laying

This type of laying must follow the technical directions concerning the adhesive used. The use of two-components glue is suggested.
Glue must be spread out perpendicularly to the laying line and with the correct spatula. Glue residue on boards must be removed immediately.

Floating system laying

Laying must be done on a thermo-acoustic mat (eg. aluminised polyethylene sheet, cork, non-woven fabric, Yuta etc.) and making sure that a low water content vinyl adhesive is spread on the bottom tongue part in a punctiform manner.

Nailing system laying

This technique consists of oblique nails penetrating between the tongue and laying base made of cement damped softwood joists, wooden floor-boards or wooden panels. The tongue must be turned towards the wall and the groove opposite towards the inside of the room.

In all three cases it is suggested to keep floor-boards at least 8/10 mm away from the wall all along the perimeter of the room.
